BC Rural Health Conference

The annual British Columbia (BC) Rural Health Conference (RHC) creates an intimate learning space for new and veteran rural physicians and allied health professionals to network, share knowledge, and update and learn new skills. Each RHC offers evidence-based, accredited, and interactive hands-on workshops and small group sessions, along with large plenaries, on numerous rural health

topics. Wellness sessions and family-friendly social events are also interwoven into the event. The conference is planned and executed in collaboration with the University of British Columbia Continuing Professional Developmentand funded by the Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues.

Adapted RHC to virtual format to accommodate pandemic safety measures

To continue supporting rural health care providers and communities during the pandemic, the 2021 RHC was delivered as a fully virtual conference. This was a first for RHC and the event was filled with a dynamic, interactive and intimate program, which included inspiring rural relevant plenaries, break out sessions and hands-on workshops that enhanced suturing, airway, and ultrasound skills. The conference program included dedicated open spaces and opportunities to virtually meet up with colleagues during coffee breaks. Several movement and wellness breaks were also offered. 

Hosting the conference virtually also allowed the team to be more mindful of environmental impacts. The RHC planning team and RCCbc, as a whole, will continue to be climate-conscious when planning future events, including supporting virtual registrations.

Attracted 320 conference participants

RHC 2021 was a great success with 320 attendees connecting virtually from across BC and other parts of Canada. Many participants said they appreciated the virtual platform because it allowed them to attend, whereas, in previous years, it was not possible due to travel time, cost, or availability.  

Making a Difference

Given the importance of building connections and relationships among rural doctors and other health care leaders from across the province, the RCCbc looks forward to hosting the 2022 BC Rural Health Conference in Penticton from May 13–15, 2022.

“For the first time since the start of the pandemic, RHC 2022 will be held in-person at the Penticton Lakeside Resort on the shores of scenic Okanagan Lake, on the lands of the Syilx (Okanagan) People,” says Dr. Stuart Johnston, interim RHC co-lead, alongside Dr. Nicole Ebert. “If you can’t make it in person, registration is also available for access to the recorded sessions post-conference.”

As always, RHC 2022 will offer scores of CME learning opportunities, which participants have come to expect. Several social and networking opportunities will also be offered throughout the weekend, along with movement and wellness breaks, and daycare services.

“Although CME is a major component of RHC 2022, the biggest advantage to attending this event is the chance to reconnect with rural health colleagues during the conference and its numerous social and networking events,” says Dr. Ebert.
