Quality Team Coaching for Rural BC
Research shows that high-functioning healthcare teams exhibit eight consistent elements: Self-awareness and well-being; situational awareness and adaptability; psychological safety; supportive open flow of communication; shared commitment to values, roles and goals; shared leadership; empowering team infrastructure; and having a learning culture. With this in mind, Quality Team
Coaching for Rural BC (QTC4RBC) supports interprofessional teams in optimizing their team culture of safety, learning, and quality, which leads to positive patient and provider experiences. This multi-component Program includes coach-led workshops, team and leadership coaching sessions, financial support for a team quality plan, and access to a concierge service and quality advisor.
Our Achievements
Provided coaching to 11 rural health care teams
Eleven teams were offered a six–module workshop, up to four team–coaching sessions, funding, one-to-one leadership coaching sessions, and access to a concierge service. Participants reported positive outcomes of the program, while others shared some challenges, particularly related to their ability to participate while stretched thin due to Covid-19, frontline staffing shortages, burnout, and turnover.
Collected and analyzed feedback
Outcomes and feedback shared by participants in the QTC4RBC program was analyzed and the team began working on the next iteration of the program planned for 2022/23.
Making a Difference
The Duncan Emergency Department decided to do whatever it took to ensure the care they provided the community could continue—and that the team at the centre of it was functioning at its best.
To help with this, they accessed Quality Team Coaching for Rural BC, and the results have been remarkable. The team reported feeling less stressed, having better communication, and working with each other at another level that they haven’t before.
Nurse, Terra Lee, says the program came along at an important time: “We’ve seen a change in the way we are functioning. I’m so grateful that we have this opportunity to do this in a time of crisis. It’s providing safer care when we’re working under such challenging circumstances.”
Dr. Rahul Gupta, one of the physician coaches, says: “There’s a huge emphasis on creating spaces and carving out styles of communication that foster support and belonging so that people could feel that this was a safe place to not only share their challenges, but also work together to design a way forward.”
